The Delaware Quality of Life Coalition (DQOLC) has been in existence for seventeen years, but wasn’t always known by that name. Originally founded in 2000, the Delaware End of Life Coalition was established to bring awareness to the need for conversation with patients, caregivers, and healthcare practitioners on end-of-life issues. The Coalition is a dynamic group that is comprised of nurses, physicians, social workers, hospice staff, clergy, educators, grief counselors, funeral home staff, and many others.

Although many health care providers know of the importance of hospice and palliative care, there still remains a stigma and misunderstanding of the roles of hospice and palliative care. In 2017, practitioners in the Mid-Atlantic region will be able to attend a conference specifically geared toward understanding these roles and is designed to provide information that translates into a better patient-centered experience. Anyone can attend the conference, but those in the healthcare industry will be particularly interested to learn about latest trends with palliative care, hospice, and Delaware Medical Orders Scope of Treatment (DMOST). The topic of caregiver burnout is also addressed, with ways to recognize and combat the stresses that impact the quality of caregiving to patients and impacts the quality of life for those in this field.
